Nashville Star 07.07.08

I know i said I would blog this show. I know. But I’ve been lazy. And really busy. But I have been watching, and was SO SAD to see my fave act voted off last night. I <3 you Pearl <3!

Pearl Heart

I like Gabe and Melissa, but I am really sick of Shawn - she is so awful! And I want to like Coffey but his vibrato is worse than Carmen Rasmussen (who is knocked up, btw.) But lets talk about who should really be voted off next. Yes, Billy Ray, I’m talking to you. Where is Ryan? Honestly.

So now that Pearl Heart is gone, Go Gabe!

Nashville Idol Star

So I knew I wanted to watch, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to write about it. But how could I not! Let me summarize the things I already love: No bad auditions! They get right to the top 12 on show 1. That is refreshing. Secondly, the judges are all sane! What a concept! And thirdly, they all sing songs that I know, and I don’t even really listen to country! Ok, one more, the elimination was not a long and drawn out event.

Nigel, I hope you’re taking notes.

I don’t have floating heads for these kids, because blogging this show was a little last minute. But I am going through a little Idol withdrawal this season, so I am latching on. Until I can get this sorted out, I am being lazy and typing this out paragraph style.

Pearl Heart: Wide Open Spaces - they need some work on their harmony. It was great at first, but their voices don’t have too much control. Give ‘em a few weeks though–they could polish up real nice.

Tommy Stanley: Walking in Memphis - I liked the original arrangement. It was a little fast though.

Shawn Mayer: Piece of My Heart - Her video piece makes her sound like she has an attitude. Her range is really good though.

Third Town: Elvira - I love them! They were the most entertaining group yet. The judges hated them, though.

Coffey: Drift Away - His voice is definitely the most distinctive that I have heard. I can’t decide if I love it or if I find is vibrato annoying. It’s really walking the line. But he is so entertaining, that I have to give him another chance.

Laura and Sophie: Stand By Your Man - I don ‘t know if they blend as well as they think. One is stronger than the other (I don’t know which is which.) But they are pretty safe.

Gabe Garcia: All My Exes Live in Texas - I like this kid - he seems really down to earth. His style is a little too country, but that’s just me. I can see his appeal.

Alyson Gilbert: Suds In The Bucket - I think she Is trying too hard. I want to like her, but she has some voice problems. She brought it home in the end, but like the judges said it was too pageant-y.

Ashlee Hewitt
: Bubbly - It was a really honest performance. I enjoyed that. I think it was a good song choice for her, although she has a few annoying voice quirks that need to get worked out.

Charley Jenkins
: I Like It, I Love It - Pretty good! He has a classic country voice, too, and he flirts with the audience.

Justin Gatson
: Drops of Jupiter - I want to like this hottie, but his voice sucks in comparison to the other guys. He has charisma and all, but the singing wasn’t good at all.

Melissa Lawson
: Something to Talk About - I love her! She will be a front runner for sure. The judges seem to love her, and She will definitely go over well with the audience too.

The judges eliminate one tonight, but after tonight it is America. The judges voted Charley Jacobs out. I thought it should have been the hottie kid, but I guess there is a different set of criteria for this show. I think this will be a fun show to watch. I am a borderline country fan, and since tonight didn’t prove to be too twangy, plus I love Jewel, this will be permanently Tivoed. I encourage you to do the same…

Final Prediction

It’s the top 3, the season is wrapping up, so what can we expect this next two weeks? See, at this point in season 4, everyone knew Carrie would win. Even last season, Melinda was losing steam, and we could see Jordin becoming the front-runner. In season 5, once Chris got the boot, it was Taylor’s game to lose. This season? It is hard to pick the winner, even now.

Although Syesha has been picking up steam, (and believe me, I would love to be proven wrong in a huge upset), I think she is going this week. Jason had a lot of teen voters who are also loyal to the show. His votes will probably filter towards Cookie, with a few towards Archie. I think this will leave Syesha a day late and a dollar short this week, despite the likely-hood of turning out some killer performances.

A David-David finale is fairly inevitable at this point.

But then what? Mr. Cook has been consistently fantastic. He has a great chance of winning the whole thing at this point. I can see him, despite getting a pathetically crappy original song to sing next week, tweaking it to his benefit. It could be awesome.

And as we all know, Archie is having his own set of parental issues off set, so that could shake him this week and into next. And I know I am going against logic and common sense, but I STILL predict Archuleta to take this puppy home. He has his vices: his blubbering stage banter and a crazy parental unit, but I think a week from today, when you see the fireworks, and the gospel choir, and his adorable chubby cheeks singing his heart out on stage, he is going to get a bunch of swing voters.

There is always the upset scenario: Archie self-destructs tonight and Syesha and Cookie have another sing-off, with David taking the cake. And while I could see this panning out as well, I have learned to go with my gut instinct at this stage of the game.

Am I crazy? You tell me…

Comparison Shopping: IWALY

Ok, so I can only do a pseudo comparison shopping…Syesha’s half Dolly half Whitney IWALY versus LaKisha’s full-on Whitney version in last summer’s tour. Now LaKisha got to sing the whole song, while Syesha only got one and a half minutes…fair or not, here it is:

LaKisha

Syesha

And on to the voting!

So I haven’t actually watched Wednesday’s episode yet, though from patrolling the internet, I know what the results were (It also helps that the spoiler list circulating was 100% correct.) I am working on the floating heads for this year’s crop o’ kids and will get to them as soon as this particular week of classes stops whipping my ass.

However, I have been watching last night’s episode (stored safely on my computer) as I am working into the wee hours, and I will go out on a limb to say that this is definitely the year of the Davids. Hernandez, Archuletta, and Cook - all huge favorites of mine after last night’s show. My early favorites for the girls are Amanda the rocker and Syesha, though I can’t put too much faith in her until I see what her first few weeks of song choices are. I hope she takes the road less traveled.

As for who I’m not rooting for: Carly, and pretty much any blonde girl (especially the Carrie wannabes - I save all my love for the original!)

I am SO EXCITED for next week. In fact, I don’t think I’ve been this excited heading into the semi-finals in several seasons. The talent pool is far-reaching, the instrument factor is a wild-card, and the judges have been surprisingly successful at giving good, thoughtful commentary.

The season has FINALLY begun. Can. You. Dig it.
