I Wanna Rock & Roll All Night (Top 4)
May 5th, 2009
Ryan informs us of the accident on the stage – hopefully he will elaborate on twitter later!
Tonight is Rock Night with Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Slash! He is probably the coolest mentor ever. With the most awkward looking nose ring.

“Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin – I don’t even know what to say. It was an absolutely authentic rock performance, and exactly what I expected. And I hope that this is the type of music he makes. I loved the clothes, loved the makeup, and thought the screaming was somewhat subdued, considering it is rock week. It was solid, but didn’t quite thrill me. |
| 02. Allison Iraheta
|

“Cry Baby” by Janis Joplin – The verses were a little slower and made the song drag a bit, but the chorus was AMAZING. I got chills. Loved the outfit and performance, per usual. I’m glad that she was clear that her other option was Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” rather than Queen’s, because I like JA’s song much better for her. And I like that she is getting feisty, but she is bordering on getting frustrated, which can come off as desperate. Don’t let them see you sweat, kid! |
| DUET!
Kris Allen and Danny Gokey
|
![]() |
“Renegade” by Styx – I’m not really sure how to comment on this whole duet thing. Obviously Simon didn’t know either. They were good, but not their thing. The harmonies were the highlight. Danny has the bigger voice so he was overpowering Kris, but since they obviously had problems hearing themselves on the stage, I can’t fault him for singing too loud. This is weird – a mix between a results show performance and Hollywood group day. |
| 03. Kris Allen
|

“Come Together” by The Beatles – Wow – I loved this! I was worried when he said he was singing this because Carly tore this up last season, but I thought it was as good or better! I disagree with the judges 100% on this one. It’s not like he chose some hard rock song, he chose The Beatles–rock, but not Guns ‘n’ Roses rock. I can’t believe they didn’t give him more props for this. |
| 04. Danny Gokey
|

“Dream On” by Aerosmith – And we wonder what broke the glass globe on stage?
DANNY’S LAST NOTE. Screamy has come out to play with another contestant, and he is not playing nice. That last note was HORRENDOUS !!! The lower notes were fine, and like Paula/Kara said, he should have gone for some other Aerosmith song like Cryin’. But I was literally hiding under a blanket on my couch during that last part. |
| DUET!
Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta
|
+1/2 |
“Slow Ride” by Foghat – I loved this one! They definitely need to do a duet on the tour. I would pee my pants. They were authentic, and I loved the way they played off each other on stage. Adam called her his little sister, and shared his hairstylist–they are SOOO BFFs. |
Well, I can definitely tell you that Gokey was the worst tonight. I really loved Kris’s performance, and think the judges are insane. Allison and Adam were also both fantastic, and I loved their duet. I am torn. I really don’t want Allison going home, and Gokey SHOULD be going home next, especially after tonight. I think Kris and Adam are safe, but maybe this turns out to be the “Daughtry” elimination, and Adam gets ousted tomorrow (ironically, when Daughtry performs.)
Another note: In seasons past, between the top 4 and top 5 performance nights, one is spectacular, and one is a trainwreck. This year, both were fantastic (Danny’s last note notwithstanding)
Just one more rant: As much as I appreciate the new dueting, I still would have rather gotten another performance song from each contestant, saving these duets for tomorrow night (we can bump No Doubt, as much as I love them). I am appalled that they cant fit eight 90 second performances in an hour. The top 3 generally perform three songs, but considering the pattern this season, we will be lucky to get two. I feel so robbed.
OK, so what did you think? Am I the only one who loved Kris tonight?

If there’s a “shocker” elimination where a TCO gets booted tomorrow, it will be Gokey getting the boot, not Adam.

I think this category was contrived by the producers as soon as Adam auditioned. They placed it strategically on Top 4 night because they knew they had a ringer and the other contestants would pale in comparison. You can’t expect musicians to be good at every genre. How would Whitney or Mariah have done tonight? How would Slash do on country night? I think you need to judge the performer in a performance of the type of music he or she would record in the real world.

I thought Kris did the best he possibly could’ve given the fact that he’s not really a rocker. It wasn’t his best performance, but I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. I voted harder than usual for both him and Allison tonight, so I hope it isn’t for nought.

I thought they were all either bad or mediocre, with one decent performance.
Whole Lotta Love was always a bad song, made “classic” only by its age. And Adam just screeched his way through the whole thing. It hurt my ears. That is EXACTLY the kind of song and performance that diminishes rock. All sound and fury, signifying nothing at all. Good theatrics as usual; terrible singing.
Cry Baby is a great Janis song, which Allison should have hit out of the park. She didn’t. The singing was thoughtless, dry, emotionless, meaningless, boring and forgettable. Missed opportunity there, Allison. Guess she was nervous. Or whatever. She sucked.
Kris was just plain terrible. Worse than karaoke. Total amateur time. He will go be going home, for sure. Too bad, because I’ve always like him the best… a real singer, amongst a bunch of wannabes and showoffs. But this one was too bad for him to survive. Soyanara, Kris.
Danny was the least bad of the four. That scream at the end… I’ve heard a lot worse from “stars”… but when they do it, it’s “awesome”. I thought it was fine. This is rock and roll… anything goes, so long as it flows.

I agree in parts with drj.
I thought Adam was cool, Allison was as expected, Kris was bad and boring, Danny was totally ok.
Still rooting for my Danny/Adam finale…
Kris should go home tomorrow.

What ???
Gokey was not OK . He was the worst this time as he was last time. I don’t know what people like in this “wedding singer” wih a dumb smile. He’s records will be realy boring and no spark.
Adam and Allison were the best. Their duet was exceptional.

The rockers did well, the crooners did not. No surprises here. Let’s move on to next week.

Oh mannnn.
I hope Gokey doesn’t get eliminated.
I’ve been a fan of his since the start of the season.
I have a feeling that Kris is leaving though.

It seems odd that anyone think Adam is not amazing. His vocals are always spot on and he is very professional and focused. Perfect voice. Allison clearly has a born talent with a unique strong voice which is a rare quality in a singer. Danny is also talented although last night he did not choose a song appropriate for his voice. Chris was awful and insulted the song. He is not a great singer, he is sweet looking. He is more a crooner and I appreciate that, but there are so many. Adam is one rare talent (and Allison, albeit young) that we do not get to see in a lifetime. He can sing anything…check it out:

I’m totally with you. I loved Chris. LOVED him.
I can’t deny that Adam is good, but I’m not a fan. He’s overindulgent and the fact that Simon hasn’t referred to him as that yet, makes me question…
I never, in my life, ever want to hear Danny sing Dream ON…EVER EVER EVER EVER again. I ALMOS turned off the TV. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever heard.
Am I the only one who thinks this weeks theme was established soley for Adam and Allison to be assured as the top 2.
I mean, Danny signed his death wish with that horrific “nails on a chalkboard…”
UGH!

[...] Laura from idolreview.net thinks so too (Link) [...]
13. Dave | May 6th, 2009 at 1:46 PM
I think the themes are scheduled well in advance of when they know who is still going to be around, even if the selections aren’t announced.
After all, they live to line up a “mentor” who will come on to shill for their latest album/tour/movie/project.
Going in to the season, everyone knows that there will be some combination of the following themes: country, rock, movies/broadway, disco and so on. That there was a rock n’ roll theme should not have been a surprise for anyone, only that it was this late in the season is.

I’m also really sad that Adam didn’t sing “Paradise City.” It would have been leaps and bounds better than “Whole Lotta Love” and IMHO I think it’s more recognizable, which we all know, earns you more votes than actually how you performed. I think Adam sounds SO much like Axl Rose that it’s not even funny.
I grew up on classic rock…it’s pretty much all I have in my iPod, and I was seriously looking forward to this week. I was overwhelmingly unsatisfied with how it turned out.
Makes me sad.

Kris was awful tonight and he knew it. Looked totally defeated after his performances.
It may not have been his genre, but this week clearly revealed he has the weakest voice of the top 4. Forget artistry and all the cr*p the panel talks about, this is a singing competition and his voice just doesn’t hold up.
He’s gone, unless he gets out the pity vote. If Danny goes home, it would be criminal.
16. Andy | May 6th, 2009 at 4:07 PM
You’re not the only one that loved Kris on top 4. He’s not the best that night, but he certainly deserved more compliment. Last note of Gokey was horrible.
I disagree with CowellCougar41 that Kris was awful, but yeah somehow he looked kinda down after all the comments.
