Free-For-All night (Top 9)
March 31st, 2009
The obligatory judges’ strut starts us off, of course. Also, I noticed that there is a cattle gate for Ryan (cattlegate= gate in the queue at an amusement park to allow you onto the ride vehicle) They don’t trust Ryan to follow a cue. Everything is dumbed down this season!
The night is “popular downloads” which translates to “whatever the eff you want.”

“Caught Up” by Usher – I love this song, so I think it was a good choice. It started out great, but it fell off a bit at the end. The last note not withstanding, it was a decent attempt overall. That said, his ambitions to make it as a legit R&B artist is far from realistic. Being in the dead-man’s spot will likely land him i n the bottom 3. |

“Turn Your Lights Down Low” by Bob Marley – *Yawn* Of all the songs on itunes (that Idol can get the rights to) she picked that? Megan needs to learn to pick songs that work for her voice rather than songs she likes. That was a mess. I do like her style, though! |
| 03. Danny Gokey
|

“What Hurts The Most” by Rascal Flatts – It was pretty good (especially after the first two) but he still hasn’t reached the potential that I saw from Hollywood week. There was some yelling, there were some riffs that fell off center. I just know he can do better! |
| 04. Allison Iraheta
|

“Don’t Speak” by No Doubt – The song choice was maybe not the best, but her vocal chops were amazing. The clothes were questionable, but at least her dress matched her hair! So I hope she garners enough of a fanbase to get her through a slightly rough week. |
| 05. Scott MacIntyre

“Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel – Dude, what’s up with the 80s mullet?! Shouldn’t someone tell him? The vocals weren’t great at the beginning but came around in the end. Considering the relatively weak night so far, he might stick around another week. |
06. Matt Giraud |

“You Found Me” by The Fray – His voice was not good. It was like he was trying too hard to play rather than sing, and his voice was shaky and all over the place. That was like a whole new Matt, and it was NOT a good thing. |
| 07. Lil Rounds
|

“I Surrender” by Celine Dion – Aside from some bum notes, it was a good vocal. But it was boring. Kelly sang it. Federov sang it. Archie rocked it at age 12 on Star Search. And it was not as good as any of those. Randy said “young it up” and he is right. |
08. Adam Lambert![]() |

“Play That Funky Music” by Wild Cherry – The screaming returns, unfortunately. And while I will take this performance any day over Sitar, I loved him so much more last week. I wouldn’t put him on par with Mick Jagger, but I could see him in that lead rock star role, for sure. I have to give him props for the vocals. |
| 09. Kris Allen
|
![]() |
“Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers – Fan freaking tastic. I knew from the first note that it was going to be good. Definitely the best of the night. |
The top performance was Kris. Worst performance was Megan followed closely by Anoop. Rounding out the bottom 3 might be Matt, or maybe Allison, but I hope not. Megan definitely deserves to go home after tonight.
Thoughts?

Absolutely loved Kris. He is really evolving as a musician. And getting more attractive every week, I might add. I think Lil deserves to be in the bottom 3. I am disappointed in her – I thought she’d be much better.

I know that Megan is odd….but I really like her. She needs to find her niche.
Adam – unbelievable – he is excellent and should win.
Danny – he was good – I do like him but I can’t get past that weird kid that did that song on youtube…the little red headed kid….
Matt – I thought he was good – not as good as last week but good
Lil – eh?
Kris – excellent
Anoop – loved him last week..this week-not so much
Allison – she’s really good – just not my style
Scott – are you kidding me? I thought he sucked. Couldn’t believe the judges like him. We (me and my peeps) were all stunned.
This week overall was disappointing.

Finally, you are starting to see things the way I see them! After you watch these kids week after week, you begin to see who is real and who is acting a part.
It’s not about religion, or sexual orientation, or vampires, or race, or style. It is about being real. Being true to how you were created to be.
If you have to put on a show to convince people that you are who you want them to believe you are, then you are not that thing at all. You are just an actor (who can sing really high), a poser, a fake.
I want to see someone genuine win.
Just two more cents from me.

I don’t know that I am on the Kris bandwagon permanently, but he was, by far, the best this week. However, Adam was fabulous last week. Maybe *crosses fingers* Matt will be great next week. So definitely credit where credit is due, but I still can’t quite define a winner yet.
Allison, despite a shaky performance and questionable outfit tonight, has been the most consistent and reliable through the competition thus far. So while I see genius come and go from the aforementioned guys, Allison is solid. So I have permanently joined the Allison bandwagon, knowing full well she will not win.
It’s nice to dream, though!

I was disappointed the most by Lil’ Rounds, again. On one of the first shows, when she did Mary J Blige, i thought we might just have a black female performer who wouldn’t fall into the Whitney trap (screeching/over singing). She has. I no longer like her.
Matt was bad, Scott was bad (again, tho not as chalk board scratching as usual), and Megan was/is just painful to watch. Maybe i just don’t “get” that singing style, but i think she sounds terrible. I wouldn’t even want to listen to her sing at a karaoke bar, let alone this show.
Danny wasn’t bad, but it annoyed me enough that he used a family death so much in the beginning that i just feel, tentative about him. He does tend to scream at times as well.
I thought Adam was amazing last week, but this week, perhaps its because i just really hate that song, but i didn’t like it. For the first time, i agreed with one of your earlier descriptions of him: Grating.

MY GOD!!! I still didn’t watch the show, but just last week I thought “what if Anoop sang ‘Caught up’`?” Can’t believe it… like telepathy over a several thousand miles :D:D:D
I’ll come back with my comments when I see the show…

Finally watched it…
Well, Anoop wasn’t as bad as they told him… but he wasn’t as good as some others.
Megan was just bad and her tone is REALLY getting boring.
Danny was great as always (god I love hjm, lol)
Alison was good, she did rush at the beginning. And I actually liked her dress and outfit.
Scott was boring again, but better than last few weeks.
Matt was good and I DID like him.
Lil was good, too. Like the wig.
Adam was great (I am just mad about people with high voices… and he seems to hit higher notes than LIl, lol).
Kris… oh, he changed a few chords exactly the way I do when I write choral pieces in minor keys… just LOVED him…
I hope Megan gets the boot.

It may come as a surprise to some but many people are attracted to Megan’s unique vocal sound. “There’s Something About Megan” and has people wanting more. She is unique as is Adam. It’s refreshing not to sit through copies (like Matt) and be reminded of other people when someone sings. I’m also one of many who miss the AOL American Idol Discussion Board.

Since daylight savings not much is on tv. I find myself playing the DVR of Idol. I wish I still had “Ring of Fire” recorded. I first tuned in that week. After “Tracks of My Tears” and like Simon said, it doesn’t matter now. Adam has already been stamped a star. Cook did it last year but Archeleta was there also. This year it doesn’t appear he has any competition, other than the lines being busy. I’m hoping for another to breakout. Last week Anoop stepped it up. This week Kris and Danny stepped it up. Lil made me cry with her long note and then going a step higher. Allison sung but not much to mention other than her outfit. Megan danced like a drunk. I hope someone will work with her. Matt did fine. Other than Adam, none stand out as unique and signature.
