The Semis, Round 3: predictable pimp spot
March 3rd, 2009
Lil Rounds in the pimp spot! Lil Rounds in the pimp spot! Did I call that one, or what?

“You’re All I Need To Get By” by Marvin Gaye – The vocals were OK, but I was distracted by his weird, monkey-like facial expressions. I was not as big a fan as the judges. |
| 02. Taylor Vifanua

“If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys – I thought the performance wasn’t half bad! She is a cute girl, very Jordin-esque. Her vocal ability is great, but I don’t think this song showed it off as well as it could. That said, no bum notes, and no annoying facial expressions, like Von. |

“I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” by Elton John – Full Disclosure: This is my favorite Elton John song, and I have been waiting WAITING for someone to sing this song since season 1! And good God, this was a painful rendition. I mean honestly, Alex! Funny kid, horrid, horrid singer! |
| 04. Ariana Afsar

“The Winner Takes It All” by Abba – She has a great voice, but had some weird issues with the big note at the end, but also a whole host of others, too. The arrangement was just weird, and I think she was ahead of the accompaniment for the whole first half of the song. I don’t think it was as bad as the judges said. |
| 05. Ju’not Joyner
|
+1/2 |
“Hey There Delilah” by Plain White Tees – Well, zero points for changing it up, since we already heard him sing this in Hollywood. Therefore his “original” take on the song is negated. What’s more, is that his vocals were really lost in the background until the very end of the song. I was reminded recently that he auditioned last season, ironically, with I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues. I wish he would have come out with that instead. He is like Chikezie 2.0. |

“Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman – I guess I appreciate the attempt at a rearrangement, but I didn’t like it. I think the whole thing was just overdone, oversung, etc. Plus, the girl needs a stylist, big time. And at least she knows it. |
| 07. Nathaniel Marshall
|
+1/2 |
“I Would Do Anything For Love” by Meatloaf – I think I would take him more seriously if he stopped with those ridiculous headbands. Because the arrangement was not too bad, and his vocals were decent. The dancing needs to stop, the jacket needs to go. |
| 08. Felicia Barton
|
+1/2 |
“No One” by Alicia Keys – That was great! There was one bum note, but other than that it was really impressive. We have all seen her performance of this on youtube, and I think she came back fighting tooth and nail. And quite honestly, the other girls have been pretty good tonight, but she is the best so far. |
| 09. Scott MacIntyre
|
+1/2 |
“Mandolin Rain” by Bruce Hornsby – There were parts that were amazing, parts that were average, but overall, I liked it, and it grew throughout the song. It had a very singer-songwriter vibe–he is like a male Brooke White: not the greatest vocalist, but always singing from the heart, and I can appreciate that. And like Paula said, I can’t wait to see him with the piano. |
| 10. Kendall Beard
|
+1/2 |
“This One’s For The Girls” by Martina McBride – Just an ok voice, had some flat bum notes, and I think Martina is tough to sing, and I think the song was a little to big for her. Maybe a Taylor swift song would have been better? Also, for a fun, bouncy song she stayed in the same spot on stage for the whole song. I mean, even the blind guy stood up and took a few steps. So, not a great entertainer. But cute dress! |
| 11. Jorge Nunez
|
Rating: +1/2 |
“Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” by Elton John – Well even though this song should be banned from Idol for-a-vah, he pretty much rocked it. He is good–like REALLY good. It will be between him and Scott for the top guy spot. |
| 12. Lil Rounds
|

“Be Without You” by Mary J. Blige – How predictable for the pimp spot! The performance wasn’t as great as I think she could be. But they are pimping her because they have yet to cast the obligatory black diva. PS, Paula was planning her “many more Lil Rounds” comment for weeks… |
This week was by far the strongest group. The biggest surprise was Felicia, and I hope she makes it through. Lil will be the top girl, and between Jorge and Scott for the guys. Throwing Felicia in as a contender for the last spot. As far as other wildcard contenders, possibly Taylor? Maybe even Kendall, because they have yet to cast the requisite country singer. And Ju’not wasn’t bad, either, but he might get caught in the shuffle. Well, I am off to watch the results on DialIdol.

I have to say I agree with just about everything you said! I would like to see Felicia, Kristen, and Scott advance. I think Lil’s great, just not a personal favorite. I was really blown away by Felicia’s YouTube version of “No One.” This one was a little less impressive, like she was trying too hard, but it was still pretty good.

i disagree with some of what you said… i thought Scott was a below average singer tonight, who, if he wasn’t “blind”, would not only have not performed tonight, but, he wouldn’t have made it out of the audition rounds. I’m all for equal access and all, but i think in a competition like this, the advantage he has for the voter is too big, and Idol knows this. Shame on them. Because of that, he’s safe as the top guy.
Top girl? Lil rounds, by far. You said something about finding the black diva every year. And my problem with that has always been, every year so far, those contestants seem to come off as poor whitney houston or aretha franklin rip-offs, who screech/over sing too much. Lil was different, this round at least, she sounded like a professional music artist, with perfect tone and control. IF, and that’s a big IF, she does that every week, she’s gonna win.
The next top vote getter is a toss up. I think this group was the best by far, and i think Idol unfairly put these groups together. Jorge may not make it through, but he would have been the #1 guy last week. Nathaniel wasn’t bad, and would have had more of a chance to make it through than Norman last week. Dial Idol says it’s going to be the black guy who sang the “Hey There Delilah”, and while he wasn’t bad, a few other people were better.

ryanflip, I agree about Scott in that his disability puts him at an unfair advantage because of the sympathy vote. I think Jorge is clearly a better vocalist than him and probably deserves the top spot. BUT I have to keep going back to someone like Brooke White, who I enjoy. If she was placed in this semi-final format this year, she would have never made it through. She needs her instrument to lean on–she is not the greatest vocalist, but her heartfelt performances (like Let It Be) were great. If Scott was in the format they had from last year, and allowed his piano in this early round, I think his overall performance would have blown people away.
So while I agree, in watching it back, that Scott maybe wasn’t as great as my initial reaction, He is the only one so far with the singer-songwriter vibe, and I would like to see him make it through, if only to see what he can do with the piano.
Also, I agree about Lil. Previous “black diva” contestants tend to fall in the Whitney trap, like Vonzell/Trenyce/LaKisha and even Syesha a bit. Melinda is the only one who I think really strayed from that, but then she got boring (which is why she lost). So my hope for Lil (as is my hope for all of them) is that they create their own path and keep surprising everyone. I like Lil, and her name is also the most fun name ever.

I agree with what you have replied. Above all, I’m a fan of the show and like to be entertained by what I see. Heck, I liked Gaspy’s performance of ‘Imagine’ last year, as I know you did.
I hope Scott blows us all away next week, so I can become a fan. Because I, like you, am fan of Brooke and many other singer/songwriters. I do have to say tho, my concern is that he won’t do well, but still make it through. We shall see.
