Rockin’ it down on Idol [05/01/07]

May 1st, 2007

Top 5 has been transformed into a reincarnated top 6. Which apparently means only one performance apiece tonight. Sad. But it is Bon Jovi night, so that makes me happy. Two will be on the chopping block this week.

Ryan tells us that Idol Gives Back raised almost $70 mil and counting. Ryan also is sporting a non-tie look for the first time this season. Looking hot, Ry! (Simon is also looking hot, but that is because he is sunburned).

We get the Bon Jovi video montage up next. This should be fun! Let’s see how the kids do…

01. Phil StaceyPhil Rating:teeth “Blaze of Glory” – Maybe its the fact that Bon Jovi + shaved head really channels Chris Daughtry for me, but I think that is the best Phil has ever been. I truly, truly enjoyed that performance. I liked the starting in the audience part, too! I disagree with Simon here, and think this performance should save him another week.
02. Jordin SparksJordin Rating:half+ 1/2 “Livin’ on a Prayer” – I think this is the first time I was nervous for Jordin to hit the notes. She should have taken it up a little bit, because it didn’t seem that the top notes were at the very top of her range, but the low ones were definitely too low. She was really shaky. I love the look, and props for effort!
03. LaKisha JonesLaKisha Rating:big+1/2 “This Ain’t A Lovesong” – KiKi is back, people! This has been a long time coming. In a last ditch effort to save herself, for sure. If she goes this week, it won’t be based on this week alone.
04. Blake LewisBlake Rating:teeth “You Give Love a Bad Name” – Blake is sporting a new hair color. (I think he made a hotter blonde – he looks too much like Pete Wentz sans Eyeliner.) Onto the performance – I really liked it. I’m sure this is going to be controversial, but it was awesome. I’m glad the beat boxing is back. Nice gamble, Blake!
05. Chris RichardsonChris Rating:half+ 1/2 “Wanted Dead or Alive” – It wasn’t horrible, but when you have Mr. Daughtry to compare it to, it was a little rough. He was straining. A Lot. I’m rooting for ya, Chris, but I don’t know if that will keep you around.
06. Melinda DoolittleMelinda Rating:big “Have A Nice Day” – I actually didn’t mind it! I didn’t know the song like I knew the others tonight, but I thought she was able to carry it well.

Well, honestly, with this group, I thought Bon Jovi would be a disaster, but it was actually not bad in an overall sense.

Best tonight: Blake
Runner up: Phil

Worst: honestly, no one, but if I had to choose, probably Chris.

I think Chris will go tomorrow. As for the other casualty, I honestly don’t know. If it is LaKisha she doesn’t deserve it this week. Neither does Phil. We shall see.

(I will refrain from making any comments about the Commander-in-Chief. Because this blog is a happy place.)

It was nice to see Gina in the audience. I’ll bet she missed being part of the show tonight. I know I missed her. I thought everybody had an “on” night. And really, I think this is the best “Top Six” in all the seasons of Idol. There have been stronger individual performers, but as a group, this “Top Six” is awesome. The weakest performance tonight was definitely Jordin, but she gave it everything. The other five put on an absolutely great show. I loved it all. I will be sorry to see anyone go.

Gretchen you are right on! I enjoyed Phil, it was a good choice for him. I just haven’t been able to really dig Jordin as much as the rest of the world seems to and tonight only helped my cause. LaKisha really impressed me big time tonight, that might be the first time I saw her really enjoy being on that stage. She really had a great performance. I’m soo glad Blake got back to Blake this week. I think Simon was right some people are going to hate it but I think that is who he really is and I loved it. I didn’t mind Chris’s performance, but he is always struggling a little bit. He is just so darn cute though its hard to not like him. I will be a little disappointed no matter who goes.

As much as I think that Blake can be rather good, the thing that bothers me about him is that all his songs sound the same, emotionally. I mean, for instance, “You Give Love a Bad Name” is about the anger and pain a guy is feeling over how falsely and poorly a girl has treated him. Blake sung it like it was about a walk through a park on a spring morning or something. He just never gives any indication that he’s singing actual words that mean anything.

That’s true, George. Blake’s got a lot of style, and I like what he did with this song. But in the end, it’s style over substance. He doesn’t seem to be dialing into the meaning behind the lyrics. Still, I can’t say too much bad about him tonight. It was an entertaining performance, and he’s a risk-taker which is always a welcome thing in this sort of competition.

Hurrah for Bon Jovi night!! Jordin should’ve listened to him during the “mentoring” session and picked a song better suited to her abilities…

I thought Chris’s performance was good! Unfortunately, so was Phil’s….he is NOT my idol and needs to hit the road, Jack!
