simon’s even snapping along [02.27.07]
February 27th, 2007
Well, the guys were so bad last week that the only place they have to go is up, right? right? Ryan says this week, it’s personal. I say, I will personally kick all of their butts if they don’t step it up. Paula’s advice? Have fun. My advice? don’t have the kind of fun Paula has.

“I Ain’t Missing You” by John Waite – Phil’s taking the dead man’s spot tonight. He is also dedicating his performance to the American Troops. I am actually a big fan of the song choice, and thought he put out a pretty good performance. I think this performance solidifies his place in the top 12. |
02. Jared Cotter![]() |

“Let’s Get it On” by Marvin Gaye – I liked his stage presence, but I prefer the Nikko Smith. Paula is overcome with emotion in a very “adult” way. Simon thinks it is love boat, but Jared redeems himself with a zinger – love it. But still not the strongest vocal performance. I’m giving him a big, but only for the face wipe move at the end. |
03. AJ Tabaldo![]() |

“Feeling Good” by Michael Buble (most recently) – I really enjoy this kid’s voice. He has a great falsetto, and he showed a lot of control. |
04. Sanjaya Malakar![]() |
Rating: + 1/2 |
“Steppin’ Out With my Baby” by Irving Berlin – Eh, I was kind of bored, actually. He has a pretty good voice. I was waiting for him to break out and just blast it at the end, and it was just like the song never reached its climax. He would be the star of a High School musical production, or even community theatre, but he is way out of his league in this competition. If he stays, it will be based on his fan base. |
05. Chris Sligh![]() |
Rating: + 1/2 |
“Trouble” by Ray Lamontagne – He had a pretty good performance, though (I always have to compare) |
06. Nick Pedro![]() |

“Fever” by Peggy Lee (and the Buble) – I like the rhaspy-ness of his voice in this genre, though, I thought he could have gotten “bigger” at the end (same as Sanjaya). I do agree that he has charasma issues. If I was him, I would be worried. |
07. Blake Lewis![]() |
Rating: + 1/2 |
“Virtual Insanity” by Jamiroquoi – I enjoy this kid! He is the guy to beat(box). I think he will bring an interesting contrast to the year of the diva. I do agree with Simon that his tuning went at the end, but he put forth such an entertaining performance, I’ll forgive. |
08. Brandon Rogers![]() |
Rating: + 1/2 |
“Time After Time” by Cindi Lauper – Eh, I think his premonitions were correct in that it was too slow. I thought there was actually a lot of potential with the song choice, but he didn’t do too much different with it. eh. I would like to see him again, though. |
09. Chris Richardson![]() |
Rating: |
“Geek In the Pink” by Jason Mraz – Well I’m a huge fan of this song to begin with, and I think he did an awesome job. Very entertaining – his sound was a mix of Jason Mraz with Justin Timberlake. He and Blake are shoe-ins for top 12. |
10. Sundance Head![]() |

“Mustang Sally” by Wilson Pickett – It was kind of a weird arrangement – I didn’t like how it started with the chorus, and it just ended funny. Asside from that, I am just not a fan – very yelling-like. I enjoyed the song itself – a good toe tapper and sing-along(very wedding reception). But when he holds those high notes out, his voice is very graty. I don’t want to say its fingernails to a blackboard, but it’s getting close. I think he is a fun guy, but I would be happy to see him go. |
Best tonight: Blake, Chris Richardson
Others that are growing on me: AJ, Phil
Going Home: Sanjaya, Nick, Brandon
Like I said, Blake and Chris R are shoe-ins for top 12. The other 4 will probably be Phil, Chris Sligh (though he hasn’t yet proven yet that he deserves it), Sundance (I’m not sold yet) and maybe Brandon (if he survives the week) or AJ. In general, much better than last week, though the girls shouldn’t be shaking in their skinny jeans quite yet.

You have to like a Rod Stewart, Bruce Springstien, or Delbert McClinton, John Fogerty, raspy type of voice to really like Sundance. I happen to like that style, so Sundance was great for me tonight. I think he sealed a spot in the top 12.

I agree with DrillerAA, I liked Sundance tonight also, and I think Sanjaya is too much like Michael Jackson…ew.

Oooo, I am putting a hex on those Hello Kitty phones as I type. I would bet money Sanjaya is going to make the finals because he’s cute. Sundance will too, on the strength of the organized VFTW campaign. I picked Brandon early on, but now I’m not so sure. That certainly was a dreary performance from him.
I think the Chrises and Blake will breeze through, along with Phil. Too bad really, because I think Brandon and AJ have potential. I just don’t think they’re going to stick around long enough to prove it.

Actually Taylor Hicks sang Trouble, not Elliott. You can compare his performance to Chris’ here:

Paze, you are very right. I stand corrected. And I am usually so good with the idol history! I am slipping…

From the short clip I saw, Sanjaya looked like “Michael Jackson does Sinatra” and that’s not a pretty sight. I’m sorry, but Nick Pedro was another weak clip. My money says these two go home. However, Brandon is definitely on the bubble and he doesn’t have the “Hello Kitty” vote or VTFW to save him.
